In East Tennessee, snow days are few and far between. So when you and yours get stuck indoors, there are only so many games you can play or puzzles you can put together.
And when all else fails, flip to your favorite streaming app and throw on one of our favorite frosty films perfect for a day off work or school.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: A group of vacationers in a luxury mountain retreat must fend for their lives after a massive avalanche buries the resort.
WHO’S IN IT: Mia Farrow, Robert Forester, and Rock Hudson
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: OK. Let’s be clear. This is NOT a good movie, but when you watch it with Mystery Science Theater 3000-style, this Roger Corman-produced festival of bad acting, bad writing, and bad directing make it one of the 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies of All Time.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Four Jamaican bobsledders dream of competing in the Winter Olympics, despite never having seen snow. With the help of a disgraced former champion desperate to redeem himself, the Jamaicans set out to become worthy of Olympic selection, and go all out for glory.
WHO’S IN IT: Leon , Doug E. Doug, Malik Yoba, John Candy, Rawle D. Lewis, Raymond J. Barry, Larry Gilman, Peter Outerbridge
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: If you love “fish out of water” and “underdog” stories, this one is for you. It’s also based on the true story of the Jamaican bobsled team who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics! How “cool” is that?!
The Day After Tomorrow
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: After climatologist Jack Hall is largely ignored by U.N. officials when presenting his environmental concerns, his research proves true when an enormous “superstorm” develops, setting off catastrophic natural disasters throughout the world.
WHO’S IN IT: Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ian Holm, Emmy Rossum, Sela Ward, Dash Mihok, Kenneth Welsh, Jay O. Sanders
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: We definitely have a soft-spot for disaster movies, and this one really upped it’s game. The effects are fantastic and the multitude of story lines help it from not getting too bogged down under the weight of all that carnage. Plus, a military carrier ship floats down the streets of New York and wolves escape the zoo. Carnage AND puppies!
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Three members of a scientific expedition, Jerry Shepard, his friend Cooper, and an American geologist, must leave their beloved sled dogs behind after a devastating accident and increasingly perilous weather conditions. Alone, the dogs struggle to survive the harsh Antarctic winter.
WHO’S IN IT: Paul Walker, Bruce Greenwood, Moon Bloodgood, Jason Biggs, Gerard Plunkett, August Schellenberg, Wendy Crewson, Panou
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: The late, great Paul Walker is really just a set piece as the true heroes of this story are the dogs. And we love dogs. This emotional roller coaster of a movie has plenty of laughs, tears, and truly touching moments that inspire us, and show us the true meaning of loyalty, courage, and the bonds of friendship. We haven’t even started watching it and we are already getting mushy.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: When their kingdom becomes trapped in perpetual winter, fearless Anna joins forces with mountaineer Kristoff and his reindeer sidekick to find Anna’s sister, Snow Queen Elsa, and break her icy spell.

WHO’S IN IT: Emma Bell, Shawn Ashmore, Kevin Zegers, Ed Ackerman, Rileah Vanderbilt, Kane Hodder, Adam Johnson, Chris York
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: So, this is NOT a family-oriented musical comedy… but it does have extreme frostbite, man-eating wolves, and a WHOLE LOT of tension and suspense. If you aren’t an “on the edge of your seat, nail-biting, anxiety fest” lover, then this movie might not be for you. But we sure do love it.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Dim, but exceedingly kind bouncer Doug Glatt is a misfit among his brainy family members. When a minor-league Canadian hockey team witnesses his one-hit knockout punch, they bring him on as an Enforcer in hopes his fighting skills will help them land success and prestige.
WHO’S IN IT: Seann William Scott, Eugene Levy, Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber, and Alison Pill.
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: You may know Scott as Stiffler from the American Pie series, but he does a character 180 in this funny, somewhat touching, story of a guy who just wants to be nice to everyone, and ends up kick butt and taking names. Plus, it’s hockey, and you know we LOVE hockey.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: During the Ice Age, Manny, a no-nonsense woolly mammoth; Sid, a loudmouthed ground sloth; and Diego, a saber-tooth tiger, come across a human baby and work together to return it to its tribe.
WHO’S IN IT: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, and Denis Leary
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: Skratt. This franchise of films has so much heart that you should definitely watch them all, but the clear break-out character is the saber-toothed squirrel in constant search of a place to bury his acorns. Hilarity ensues.
The Mountain Between Us

WHO’S IN IT: Kate Winslet, Idris Elba, Beau Bridges, Dermot Mulroney, Linda Sorensen, Vincent Gale, Marci T. House, Dania Nassar
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: This movie is a test of endurance, not just for its characters, but for your emotions. Both actors deliver riveting performances and the film is full of tense moments that will tug at your heartstrings while demonstrating the will of the human spirit. Seriously. We cried. Like… a lot.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: When Miami dentist Ted Brooks finds out that he’s been named in a will, he travels to Alaska to claim his inheritance. Once he gets there, however, his dreams turn to mush: he discovers he’s been left a mischievous team of sled dogs — who have got it in for him. Making matters even worse is the crusty mountain man Thunder Jack, who’s also got it in for the city slicker. Wanting to claim the dogs for himself, Jack urges Ted to hotfoot it back to warmer climates.
WHO’S IN IT: Cuba Gooding Jr., James Coburn, Sisqó , Nichelle Nichols, M. Emmet Walsh, Graham Greene, Brian Doyle-Murray, Joanna Bacalso
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: Sure it may feel like a late-90s rollover in terms of comedy and timing, but who could say no to a movie about an elite bunch of sled dogs who turn Cuba Gooding Jr. into a slapstick laugh factory? Not us!
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: The Snowpiercer, a train operating on a globe-spanning track, is carrying the last remnants of humanity after an attempt at climate engineering in order to stop global warming has unintentionally created a new Snowball Earth. WHO’S IN IT: Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Go Ah-sung, John Hurt, and Ed Harris
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: Chris Evans makes a dramatic turn from Captain America to the leader of the resistance in an incredible departure from his usual family friendly fare. This bizarre film has gained a sizeable cult following, and has inspired an upcoming TV series. It’s gritty, nerve-wracking, and has inspired some pretty clever conspiracy theories about who the characters MIGHT actually be…
